Depending on how long cookies last on your browser, they are classified as session cookies or persistent cookies. 

Session cookies last only for the browser session and are deleted once you leave the web page or close the browser. 

Websites use persistent cookies to recognize your device, enhance website performance, create personalized ads, and optimize user experience for the next time you visit a website. Thus, persistent cookies are created to last longer: when you close the browser and open it up again, the cookie is still there. Persistent cookies can last for a year or longer.

While most privacy laws do not regulate the lifespan of cookies, the eprivacy Directive requires periodic renewals of Cookie Consent at least once a year. Thus, most persistent cookies also last for one year.
